A helicopter crashed into the Hudson River near Pier 40 on Thursday afternoon, resulting in at least one fatality and prompting an urgent response from emergency crews, according to the New York City Fire Department and other sources.
The incident occurred around 3:15 p.m. near the intersection of West Houston Street and West Street. Witnesses reported seeing the helicopter “split in half” mid-air before crashing into the river. A loud, thudding noise and what appeared to be a broken rotor blade were also noted by those nearby.
Sources confirmed that five individuals were on board the aircraft at the time of the crash, including two adults and three children. At least three victims have been recovered from the water and are being transported to hospitals in New Jersey for treatment.
The helicopter had reportedly taken off from New York City’s Downtown area before it went down in the river near the New Jersey border, close to the Holland Tunnel vents near Jersey City.
Emergency response teams from the FDNY, including Land Marine units, are actively conducting rescue operations at the scene.
Authorities have yet to determine the cause of the crash, and the exact number of people on board remains unconfirmed. Police have advised drivers to expect traffic delays in the area, particularly along the West Side Highway and Spring Street.
The situation is developing, and further updates are expected as more information becomes available.
