Authorities in Colorado are treating the hypothermia death of 97-year-old Corrye Brewer as a homicide, following the release of an autopsy report revealing she was intentionally left outside in frigid conditions.
Brewer, who suffered from a cognitive impairment requiring medication, was last seen on January 24 in Peyton, Colorado, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Her family reported her missing the next day.
On January 27, the National Center for Missing and Endangered, Inc. confirmed Brewer had been found deceased. “We extend our heartfelt condolences during this difficult time,” the organization posted on Facebook. “We are deeply saddened by your loss and want you to know that our thoughts are with you and your family.”
Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office later located Brewer’s body outside an abandoned home, local outlets including CBS News reported.
An autopsy conducted by the El Paso County Coroner’s Office determined that Brewer died of hypothermia and classified her death as a homicide. According to the report, a family member allegedly left Brewer outside on the day she disappeared, without access to shelter, personal belongings, or appropriate protection from the weather. Temperatures had dropped to 16 degrees that day, and snow was falling.
Brewer’s grandson told CBS News, “Somebody needs to be held accountable” for her death. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing.
