Rumors have swirled about a possible split between Barack and Michelle Obama, but the former First Lady recently set the record straight during an appearance on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast. Speaking candidly, Michelle opened up about life as an “empty nester” and the personal growth that has come with it.
“For the first time, it’s about whatever I want,” Michelle said, reflecting on the newfound freedom she’s experiencing now that her daughters are grown. She described how, for years, her identity was tied to being a mother and partner, often putting her family’s needs before her own. Now, she’s focused on rediscovering herself — and that shift, she said, has led to public speculation.
“People couldn’t fathom that I was simply making choices for myself,” she explained. “So they jumped to the conclusion that Barack and I were divorcing.”
Part of the speculation stemmed from Michelle’s absence at certain high-profile events that Barack attended solo, including Donald Trump’s inauguration and the funeral of former President Jimmy Carter. Fueling the gossip further, a tabloid even claimed that actress Jennifer Aniston was somehow involved — a claim Aniston quickly dismissed, saying she barely knows Barack and is actually closer to Michelle.
Despite the noise, Michelle made it clear: she’s not walking away from her marriage — she’s simply walking toward herself.
