Mel Gibson’s Gun Rights Restored by Trump

In a move stirring significant controversy, the U.S. Department of Justice has reinstated actor Mel Gibson’s federal gun rights, more than a decade after his 2011 misdemeanor domestic violence conviction.

This decision, approved by Attorney General Pam Bondi under President Donald Trump’s administration, positions Gibson among ten individuals granted such restorations.

Gibson, known for his staunch support of Trump, was previously appointed as a “special ambassador” to Hollywood by the former president. His reinstatement has ignited internal disputes within the Justice Department, particularly following the dismissal of Elizabeth G. Oyer, the department’s pardon attorney.

Oyer alleges her termination resulted from her refusal to recommend Gibson’s rights restoration, citing concerns over public safety and the seriousness of his past conviction.

The decision has drawn criticism from advocacy groups and legal experts who argue that restoring firearm rights to individuals with domestic violence histories undermines efforts to combat such offenses. Despite the federal reinstatement, Gibson may still face state-level restrictions, as firearm laws vary across jurisdictions.

This development underscores ongoing debates over gun rights, domestic violence, and the influence of political connections within the justice system.
